With its rich variety of indigenous and immigrated cultures from around the globe, Australia is a world leader in the field of Community Cultural Development—community-based arts programs that describe the work of artist-organizers and other community members collaborating to express identity, concerns, and aspirations through the arts and communications media. In this course you’ll experience the importance of the arts in our societies and discover the many ways that the arts strengthen communities, by researching and participating in community-based arts programs that span the traditional fine and performing arts as well as media, oral history, ethnography, and social activism. You will realize the many ways in which you can play an active role in the cultural development of your own community upon returning home.
Dr. James Day won a 2011 Executive Endeavour grant from the Australian government to conduct research with leading practitioners of Community Cultural Development in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney this past summer, and he has taught classes and led students through similar work in the greater Trenton metropolitan area. He is an award-winning guitarist who has taught throughout the world, including in the TCNJ-Goethe U Frankfurt faculty exchange program.
TCNJ students will complete both a TCNJ Faculty-Led Program application as well as the AustraLearn application.
For more information, students should follow the AustraLearn website link and learn how to apply for the program.
