Paris before the Great War explores the cultural and artistic crosscurrents in Paris from 1865 to 1914 and their relationship to and role in the birth of modernism. Through a dual focus on art and literature—the work, its history, theory, and criticism—students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the actual context of Paris and the rich physical, social, aesthetic, and philosophical milieu of the period from the Belle Époque to the outbreak of World War I. Designed as an interdisciplinary Honors course, Paris before the Great War is not tied to a major. Rather, it provides an enriched learning experience for students of art, literature, art history, history, and philosophy as well as focused exposure to arts and humanities for students outside these disciplines.
Excursions
Paris is your laboratory – you will visit many of the major museums with your two instructors – there are too many to list here! In addition to studying art and culture in the French capital, you will also have a three-day, two-night excursion to Nice in the south of France. Professors Friedman and Fichner-Rathus will be discussing the details of the program with students at two information sessions: Wednesday, October 26, at 3pm in AIMM 230 and Wednesday, November 2, at 12noon in Social Science 131.
