TCNJ Summer in Tanzania – May 14 – July 5, 2012

WGS 377  Gender & Development in Tanzania: Arts, Culture, Politics, & Society (1 unit)

Program Director: Dr. Marla Jaksch, Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies

No Pre-Requisites, Language Requirements, or GPA Restrictions – Open to all students (including current first-year students in good academic standing)

This 6-week experience is designed to acquaint students with the politics of development first hand through work in and with community based and grassroots development projects in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, and Zanzibar. Each of these regions is known for its diverse population, geography, food, language, arts and culture, and religion.

Led by Marla Jaksch, Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, and assisted by Tanzanian artist Warcheerah Kilima, students will engage in conversations about, learn diverse strategies for, and assist in implementing projects addressing specific issues such as underemployment, indigenous and women’s rights, land rights, climate change and environmental justice, health and more.

Excursions: 

  • Maasailand community stay
  • Chagga women’s group homestay on slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro
  • historic slave trade sites in Bagamoyo and Zanzibar
  • Art & culture museums in Arusha, Bagamoyo, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar
  • NGOs, CBOs, and community based organizations in more than 10 different communities
  • Safari game drive to Mikumi National Park
  • Bagamoyo and Zanzibar UNESCO World Heritage sites
  • workshops, performances, and discussions with well-known artists, musicians, and youth activists and organizers
  • University of Dar es Salaam student exchange
  • African Liberation Heritage sites throughout the region
Program Cost for a six-week program:
In-State: $6,164.64
Out-of-State: $7,551.56

Program Cost Includes: Tuition for one TCNJ unit, accommodations, all meals, in-country land transportation, entrance fees, cultural programming
Program Cost Does Not Include: Airfare ($1,700), Tanzania visa ($100)
