TCNJ Oxford – Study Abroad at the University of Oxford in England
All TCNJ Students and All Majors Eligible
The College of New Jersey enjoys a relationship with the Oxford Study Abroad Program that allows TCNJ students in all majors to study at Oxford for a semester or a year. (Students may opt to study for “one term,” “two terms,” or all three terms of an academic year at Oxford.)
The system at Oxford is a bit different from TCNJ, but that’s part of the program’s attraction. Rather than take four courses per semester, students will negotiate two tutorials with Oxford faculty (with the help of OSAP administration). Students take one primary course for nine credits, or 2.25 TCNJ units – each meeting with a tutor counts for one academic credit. The topics of these tutorials are wide-ranging – a quick look at the OSAP academic guide will outline the many different types of learning opportunities available in Oxford. Students will then pick a secondary course for five credits, or 1.25 TCNJ units. (Students have the option of earning as many as eighteen credits, or 4.5 TCNJ units, should they want to take additional coursework. Please talk to OSAP about their 18-credit option.)
OSAP’s Academic Information page details how OSAP differs from the conventional system in the USA.
How should TCNJ students arrange for credit for Oxford tutorials (and post those arrangements on the TCNJ Academic Evaluation Form)?
-
Students should discuss what they would like to study at Oxford with their departmental advisors – majors and minors. After these conversations, students should have a series of possible topics selected. For example: “Germany and the Cold War,” taken as a primary course at Oxford, might count for one TCNJ unit of German history and one TCNJ unit of the History of the Cold War.
-
Students interested in earning liberal learning credit should contact Bob Anderson in the Liberal Learning office (Green Hall 109) to discuss how primary and secondary courses might be used to complete Liberal Learning requirements.
-
Students interested merely in earning elective credit should have the Records and Registration office sign off on both the primary and secondary courses taken at Oxford.
